Research by the 3D Center in the Hungarian Space Mission

2026-06-25

Researchers from the University of Pécs are also behind the successes of Hungarian space research—including experts from the 3D Center at the University of Pécs Faculty of Medicine, who contributed to the experiments conducted as part of the HUNOR Program.

One year ago, Tibor Kapu, Hungary’s second astronaut, set off for the International Space Station as a member of the Axiom-4 mission. To mark the anniversary, the HUNOR Program released a special video in which the astronaut personally guides viewers through the ISS.

The mission was not only a milestone for Hungarian space research but also presented an outstanding opportunity for researchers at the University of Pécs. Several research groups from the University of Pécs participated in the HUNOR Program, including the PTE Medical School 3D Center. The PTE–3D–ESEL3D research group studied the behavior of 3D-printed materials in a microgravity environment. This research may contribute to the development of even more reliable additive manufacturing technologies in the future for both the space industry and terrestrial applications. The MagyAR (Neuromotion VR) project investigated cognitive and physiological changes occurring in outer space using a unique, VR-based toolkit, seeking to answer how human mental abilities evolve during a space mission and what neurological and other physiological processes underlie these changes. The Step in Space (SiS) program explores the scientific and human dimensions of the HUNOR mission in a virtual reality environment, bringing the experiences of space exploration closer to a wider audience. The project can be viewed at the HUNOR Visitor Center, HUNIVERZUM, in Budapest. The Vitapric project, conducted in collaboration with the University of Debrecen, aimed to breed plants that are resistant to the challenges of space and serve as excellent food sources.

We are proud that the PTE Medical School 3D Center’s research was part of this internationally significant scientific mission.
